Netting of stored energy
The Electricity Market Act allows users of energy storage units to calculate the network service transmission charge and the renewable energy charge on the basis of netted quantities of electricity.
Netting means that the quantities of electricity taken from the network and fed into the network are compared with each other. The quantities measured during the month are aggregated. If the quantity of energy taken from the network is greater than the quantity fed into the network, the difference between those quantities constitutes netted energy, on the basis of which kilowatt-hour-based charges are applied.
Netting is carried out after the network contract providing for netting enters into force and is performed on a calendar month basis.
Who is eligible for netting and under what conditions?
Netting may be implemented on a network connection for which, in addition to consumption conditions, electricity production conditions have been agreed and where the use of the storage unit forms part of those production conditions.
Netting can take place only if the use of an energy storage unit has been agreed in the network contract and the metering point meets one of the following conditions.
- Only electricity storage and consumption occur at the metering point where the storage unit is located.
- There is no electricity consumption other than the own consumption of the generating installation at the metering point where the storage unit is located together with a power generating installation. The charging capacity of the storage unit is at least 50% of the capacity of the metering point in the direction of electricity consumption from the network.
- A separate metering point has been established on the network connection solely for the energy storage unit and there is no other electricity consumption and/or production.
If electricity generation, consumption and storage are measured jointly at a metering point, the statutory exception for billing charges on stored energy does not apply because the stored energy cannot be distinguished at that metering point.
The electrical installation of the storage unit user must comply with all netting conditions throughout the entire netting period. Imatra Elekter has the right to request from the storage unit user proof that the metering point is being used for its intended purpose.
Read the netting conditions (pdf).
How to request netting?
Energy storage unit users can request the netting of the quantities of energy taken from the network and fed back into the network at a metering point during the storage period by submitting a relevant application using the network operator’s form (pdf).
The signed application must be submitted by email to [email protected].
The network operator will apply netting once the applicant has fulfilled all conditions set out on this page and concluded an appropriate network contract.
Netting and billing
The netting of electricity quantities is permitted only in specified price packages. Netting applies once a network contract has been concluded under the relevant conditions.
The netting of energy quantities is applied:
- at low voltage in the price package Partner 24 Pluss
- at medium voltage in the price package Põhitariif kW
Netting is applied to the network service kilowatt-hour-based transmission charge and the renewable energy charge.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the charge calculated based on the total balance if the quantity fed into the network exceeds the quantity taken from the network?
If, during a calendar month, the quantity fed into the network is greater than the quantity taken from the network, the netted quantity used as the basis for the kilowatt-hour-based charge is considered to be zero.
